Leonardo da Vinci TK-8th Grade School
California Distinguished School
Educating the Renaissance learner through Integrated Thematic instruction
School Mission:
Leonardo da Vinci K-8 School is a community dedicated to the development of the whole child as a literate, curious, and inventive person, responsible for preserving and creating beauty in cultural and natural environments. LdV fosters this Renaissance child of the Arts and Sciences model through Integrated Thematic Instruction.
School History:
Leonardo da Vinci School (LdV) was established in 1989 as a kindergarten through 8th grade school site and today there are 775 students enrolled. The student makeup includes one early kindergarten class, four classes at each grade level from kindergarten to third grade, three classes for each grade level from fourth to sixth grade, and 156 middle school students. Students in middle school grades 7 and 8 rotate to six different classes and are taught by teachers who hold single subject credentials and have experience teaching high school. Students are taught through board-adopted texts, thematic instruction (Highly Effective Teaching formerly called Integrated Thematic Instruction), and mastery projects (long term, in-depth projects supported by written report and oral presentation). In addition, LdV incorporates the following into thematic units used at every grade level: 8-10 learning field trips, large end-of-unit projects, research projects, oral presentations, science instruction, social science curriculum that connects to the English Language Arts Program, and math that covers the four common core domains. We are dedicated to educating the whole child through Integrated Thematic Instruction.
Enrollment:
We have scheduled tours for families who are looking at Leonardo da Vinci School for 2026-2027. Leonardo da Vinci School is an open enrollment public school. Leonardo da Vinci School offers a specialized program. Attending a tour is not required but it is encouraged so that families are informed about the school.
In order to join our community and enter the SCUSD lottery to attend LdV, parents must complete two items (complete SCUSD School Mint Registration and SCUSD Open Enrollment Lottery Form.
Please note that not every grade level will have openings.
Open Enrollment for 2025-2026 is now closed.
Additional information:
For LdV current Transitional Kindergarten (TK) students- the students will move into the LdV kindergarten classes.
For families who do not have a child enrolled at LdV, there will be approximately 50 kindergarten spots available through the open enrollment lottery.
For families who do not have a child enrolled at LdV, TK has been a lottery of LdV siblings for the last two years. News! We added a second TK for 26-27. This means we should now have TK spots for new students.
There are limited spots in 1st-8th grade as families often stay at the school from kindergarten through middle school.
For LdV siblings entering kindergarten, who were not in TK, they need to complete the registration process and the SCUSD Open Enrollment Lottery form for kindergarten- 8th grade. We will discuss the enrollment, lottery and waiting list process at the presentation.
In mid-March Early April the district emails letters to families to inform them they have been either admitted into the school or that they have been placed on the waitlist. We hope all interested families are able to join the LdV school community!
In February, after you set up your SCUSD Schoolmint account in order to enter the open enrollment lottery, please check your school account regularly to make sure you receive time sensitive information.
While the process may seem challenging to join the school, we have 775 students and over 400 families. We hope that if our school philosophy is aligned with your interest areas for your child’s TK-8th grade education- you will start the process to connect with this school community. Please join us!
Warm Regards,
Devon Davis
Principal
